Toll-free numbers are sometimes targeted by automated callers who dial in and stay connected for as long as possible—running up your costs since you pay for the call. These callers have no incentive to hang up, and without safeguards, they can leave your toll-free bill unnecessarily high.

To help protect your number, we recommend the following best practices to filter out robo callers and reduce unnecessary usage.

Recommended Practices for Toll-Free Numbers

  • Create separate daytime and after-hours call flows. After-hours call flows should be more restrictive.
  • Remove default and automatic repeat options in your toll-free call flow to prevent robotic callers from looping indefinitely.
  • Require the caller to press a button before sending them to voicemail or an extension.

Steps to Implement This Protection

  • Create a Call Flow with a Menu.
Set both the Default and Invalid options to Busy, and disable direct extension dialing.
  • Create an After-Hours Call Flow.
Make it more restrictive—consider prompting callers to return during regular business hours before disconnecting.
  • Point Your Toll-Free Number to both your daytime and after-hours call flows based on your scheduling needs.
