Fax Extensions
Fax extensions are designed specifically for sending and receiving faxes using an ATA and traditional fax equipment. They use T.38 to connect to specialized fax servers that improve reliability when faxing over VoIP. Make sure your fax machine is set to 9600 baud, which is the standard setting for VoIP-based faxing.
To receive inbound faxes, you must assign a phone number to the fax extension and configure that number to deliver faxes directly to it. Alternatively, you can configure the inbound fax number to convert faxes to PDF and deliver them to the online fax portal or to your email (see User Preferences).
If you plan to use multiple inbound fax extensions, you can set an overflow extension that receives faxes when the primary fax line is busy. This helps reduce busy signals and ensures better fax delivery.
Here are the three settings you can configure for a fax extension:
| Setting | Description |
|---|---|
| Fax Users | Lists the users who are allowed to send electronic faxes (PDF to Fax) through this fax extension. |
| Name | The internal name of the fax extension, used for identification within the system. |
| Override Caller ID | Specifies the outbound caller ID number used for fax transmissions. |
| Organization | Assigns the fax extension to an organization (see Defaults) to keep business-unit extensions grouped together. |
| When Busy | Allows you to forward incoming faxes to another fax extension when this one is busy. |
